What are words for Love?
The French word for Love is Amour, in German it’s Liebe, for a Korean it’s 사랑, and for Norwegians it is kjærlighet. There are many words for love in the Old Testament, but the New Testament focuses on mainly 3.
Agape – Unconditional Love from God
Phileo – Brotherly/Sisterly Love
Eros – Intimate/Romantic Love
How does the Bible define Love?
1 John 4:8 (NIV)
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love (agape).” (addition mine)
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV)
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
From the above verses we know that God is unconditional love, and John 3:16 says that he wants to share that unconditional love with us. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shows us the many ways God expresses His love to us, and it shows us how we should love other people.
BUT HOW DO WE RECEIVE GOD’S LOVE FOR US…
1 John 1:9 (NIV) – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” If we admit that we often do the wrong things and ask Jesus to forgive us for them, then God said he would get rid of our sin. When God gets rid of our sin, He is showing His love for us.
Who should we show God’s love to?
Only Family

Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
When Jesus was asked out of all the rules we’re supposed to follow which ones are the most important, His response was ‘to love God with all your heart and soul and mind, and to show your neighbor (everyone) the same amount of love you show to yourself.’
Exercise: Think of someone in your life you find hard to love, heres a short list;
annoying co-worker/boss
frustrating sibling
over/under involved parents
angry bus driver
Lets do something kind for them this week, one small act of Gods love.

Lord please help us to believe that your love is real, and help us to show your real love to everyone we meet.
